Properly working and set up, the 14's have the best HF of any consumer Altec, and the low bass has an immediacy and impact that the 19 does not.
The compromises are in the midrange where the 19 wins hands down for it's lifelike presence and smooth transition, and the 14 just cannot command a large room like the 19, there's no replacement for displacement.

That is a great deal--pretty close to what I paid for mine ($430 plus six hours of driving). They do rival the Model 19's in many ways. For $500 and a little cabinet TLC, you'd have an amazing set of speakers. I think you'd have to pay thousands to buy a new set of speakers that would sound even close to as good.

I'm not referring to simple frequency response. I'm referring to the exact sonic presentation, in particular the impact the 14 is capable of at VLF. The 19 is moderately damped in comparison.I have to disagree with this.. My 19's have very nice bass that goes low... I guess YMMV !
Again AB, i don't claim that the 19 really falls short anywhere, nor am i finding these differences as faults. I'm simply stating the immediately obvious differences most listeners will find the 14 has in contrast to the 19 or vice versa.
Also, the 14 is more room dependent, and much more placement dependent than the 19. Placement is everything with the 14's overall soundstage, and can take a bit of futzing to get right. I'd wager that the majority of people who've heard 14's have not heard them set up properly or on compatible gear.
If you have the real estate, 19's are the way to go, no question.
I've had to get by with some smaller listening listening spaces, and since i no longer have 14's, i have come to appreciate, and miss dearly all that they can do in a smaller room that no other consumer Altec can. 15's can come close, but the bent horn brings us back to the classic narrow Altec sweet spot. And while that bent 32B can sound very good, once you've lived with the wide even pattern the CD Mantaray throws, it's hard to go backward.
